Amelia Earhart Navigation Challenge

#1

Post by MrTShirt »

Watched a presentation by a group that re-created the setup Earhart was using to reach Howland island (in the Pacific) by getting a "fix"off the US ship Itasca near Howland island.

In this modern day re-creation, they used the same radios and antenna configurations on both the airplane and ship. Also, they used a Beach D-18 airplane, a cousin to the original Lockheed L-10E.

Earhart's plan was to listen for a dip in the CW signal transmitting an "A" from the US ship.

In the modern day re-creation using data logging equipment, it was shown that the dip, while existed, was so slight that a person in a 1932 noisy cockpit would likely never hear that dip. Therefore, she didn't have a good fix on Howland island and went missing.
