Dune Part Two: My Thoughts

#1

Post by rachelvarga »

I saw Dune part two and it was amazing. Timothee Chalamet was born to play Paul Atreides. There were some changes but it's understandable because of time constraints.

I don't want to be a snob but I don't think a lot of people will understand that Paul is NOT a hero. In fact Frank Herbert stated that the message of Dune is:

"The bottom line of the Dune trilogy is: beware of heroes. Much better [to] rely on your own judgment, and your own mistakes."

He also stated that these types of figures should come with a warning label that they could be bad for your health.

I saw an article from an ignorant reviewer that said that Dune is just another white savior story. It is NOT that. It's the opposite. It's about the dangers of colonization. It may seem we are doing good but down the line this will backfire. It is a warning about religion and politics.

Javier Bardem plays Stilgar the way I envision him. A deep believer that Paul is the prophecy. Nothing can sway his belief. He is such a good actor. One of, if not, the best Bond villain. The coin toss from No Country For Old Men shows how he inhabits characters so deeply.

Josh Brolin is the man. Period. Watch Outer Range on Amazon. Damn he is a good actor.

Dave Bautista is Rabban Harkonnen. No one else can be that character. I respect that he could have done a bunch of crappy movies like The Rock but picks challenging roles. Blade Runner 2049 only has him in the beginning bur it's my favorite scene.

Denis Villenuve directed Dune and Blade Runner 2049 and Sicario. It looks like he will do one more Dune Movie, Rendevouz with Rama, and Cleopatra. All his movies are next level.

It picks up where the first left off and there is no recap. The third movie will be the second book, Dune Messiah. It will complete Paul's character arc. Villenueve said he will not do the rest of the books because they go into some metaphysical stuff and God Emperor of Dune is very philisophical. I don't sew how it could translate to film. By the time you get to that book (fourth) so much has been revealed about the Dune Universe that a film cannot explain it. Plus you would need extreme cgi to show Leto II because he is almost 4000 years old and has become a sandworm.

I could explain it but it will spoil some of the current movie.

If you like the Dune movies I suggest you try out the SyFy miniseries that came out in 2000 and its sequel Children of Dune from 2003. They are both available on disc if you can find them.

The David Lynch version is okay but the addition of the weirding module as a weapon makes zero sense. It's okay but very dated to me. The Syfy series is an abomination. That version of Paul Atreides is just way off the mark. Some people love it. I just can't get over the bad acting and ridiculous costumes. There is also Jodorowsky who wanted to make Dune. A guy who never read the book, had no understanding of it, and is still crying that he didn't get to saddle our minds with some psychedelic dumpster fire.

Denis Vilineuve drew storyboards for Dune when he was 13 and has a very deep understanding of the source content.

I'm not faulting anyone who likes those versions. Some people are really passionate about them.

No I haven't but I want to see it in IMAX for sure. I read the books in English and Romanian so I will surely see it again four of five times.

Finally saw Part 2 yesterday. Really enjoyed it & felt they stayed true to the source considering time restraints.
How long until part 3?
