SHOT Show at Las Vegas Sands EXPO Convention Center

#1

Post by firefighter »

The SHOT Show (Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show) is scheduled for the Las Vegas Sands EXPO Convention Center Tuesday January 23 thru Friday January 26, 2018.  I've attended every year since it's been hosted in LV.  The Sands is located between the Venetian & Palazzo hotels.  http://shotshow.org/

If anyone will be in Las Vegas at that time and wants to hookup, send me a PM.  Btw 1/26/18 will be my 70th birthday in case people want to bring presents, lol.

Another convention is running concurrently at the Hard Rock.  The AVN Adult Entertainment EXPO is scheduled for Wednesday January 24 thru Sunday January 28, 2018.  I've never attended the AVN but I may someday.  However, I don't know any of the current pornstars because the last pornflick I saw was "Traci, I Love You" starring Traci Lords at the firehouse in the late 80's.  The film was subsequently removed from distribution when it was discovered that Traci Lords, who later became a Hollywood star,  made the film when she was under 18.

I booked Sam's Town for Monday January 22 thru Friday January 26, 2018.  It's a relatively nice place located on Boulder Highway at Flamingo road which is 6.8 miles or 18 minutes driving time to the Sands Convention Center.  Sam's Town has free parking and the resort fee is less that $20 per day.

Considering recent events I wonder if that acronym shouldn't be rethought?

Do you have a FFL? I've always wanted to go, but my understanding was that you have to be a commercial seller or buyer of guns and that it isn't open to the general public.

I've went to the AVN expo and I got a VIP pass and it was worth it to me just to do it once...another thing off my bucket list.
For general entry and the daytime expo basically you can get your picture with a bunch of actresses, some you have to pay extra some you don't, and there are lots of vendors with all kinds of sex stuff and a bunch of girls camming too. It's pretty fun, but pretty crowded. VIP gets you the after party at either the club or the VIP suite. I hung out at the suite since drinks were included (free) and it was more relaxed. They did several girl on girl shows which was fun, but none of the big name porn stars showed up which disappointed me a little. I would have liked to get a picture with Riley Reid and a few others.

NSSF probably won't change the SHOT acronym because it has been in existence since 1979 and it's descriptive of the sport they're promoting.  All of the firearms on display in the Sands are rendered inoperable in case someone would attempt to load one.  Nobody has ever been shot at a SHOT Show either.  Attendees must preregister providing their identification, related business documents, a $70 registration fee, and wear an official badge bearing their name.  Attendees may not carry firearms into the Sands, but there's armed security at the event.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation, NSSF, created the Shooting Hunting Outdoor Trade Show, SHOT Show, in 1979.  It has only been hosted in 8 different cities (Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Orlando, San Francisco and St. Louis).  Las Vegas has been the most popular home since there are more hotel rooms than any other two cities in the U.S., the mid January weather is usually good, gambling is legal and abundant, and there are 4 LPIN brothels within 80 miles.  I would bet that the Sands EXPO Convention Center, which is the 2nd largest convention center in the world and owned by casino operators, made the NSSF an offer they couldn't refuse.  The Sands could afford to bid lower since they can make up the difference from the 60,000 plus visitors who spend millions of dollars in Las Vegas Hotels & Casinos during the 4 day convention.

Dirk
I had an FFL between 1980 and 2000 when I was a firefighter.  This year I had to upload my driver license and a recent invoice.  I can still order merchandise other than firearms from wholesale distributors under my business name.  I've attended all the SHOT Shows hosted in Las Vegas and the January 23 thru January 26, 2018 show will be my 20th.  It's nearly impossible to see everything during the four day show because the Sands is huge and there's a lot of people to maneuver around.  I've seen Lee Ermey (the Gunny), Lou Ferrigno (the Hulk), and Steven Seagal at the show.  The Gunny was at Glock's booth, Lou Ferrigno was at Brownells and Steven Seagal was walking around.  I held a beautiful Perazzi over/under 4 barrel set shotgun (12, 20, 28 & 410) that was priced at $397,000, but I couldn't have my FFL dealer order it because it was a little over my Discover limit.

I've never attended the AVN but it runs concurrently with the SHOT Show now.  AVN was previously aligned with CES, Consumer Electronics Show, but CES draws over twice the attendance of the SHOT Show.  Therefore, the availability of AVN attendee rooms is greater and prices are lower during the SHOT Show week.  A friend who stayed at the Hard Rock attended AVN in 2016 and he said the real show was in the Hard Rock Hotel elevators, lol.

Happy upcoming birthday, Firefighter.

You are in much better shape than I am.

I cannot imagine the legwork of attending SHOT with the crowds.

niceguy eddie,

Thanks, I can't believe I'll be 70.  When I was in my 20's people over 65 seemed ancient.

We had a mandatory exercise period on the fire department because it was determined that firefighters that exercise regularly experienced less injuries.  I'm used to exercise so I've continued it over the years.  Another retired firefighter and I try to workout at a gym at least 3 times a week to stay in relatively good shape.  It's really important as guys become older too.

The SHOT Show and SEMA Show involve a lot of walking.  The walking surface changes from asphalt to concrete to indoor/outdoor carpet to plush carpet; the walking can be tough at times on spongy carpet since it's almost like walking in snow.  We get our share of exercise because we walk at least 5 miles each of the 4 days inside the SHOT Show at the Sands and SEMA Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center.  It's tough because there are over 65,000 people at both events to maneuver around and some are pulling carts to trip over or riding scooters.

The SHOT Show was held one year in San Francisco, but Nevada promotes legal business; therefore, it has been held in Las Vegas 20 times over the last 39 years.  The NRA Annual Meeting and Gun Shows were frequently held at the Cow Palace, but San Francisco's threats to ban gun related events have prompted most of them to move to other venues that are grateful to take their money.  One of the few that remains is the Crossroads of the West Gun Show

The Great Western Gun Show was previously held at the Pomona Fairplex, but they moved to Las Vegas in 1999 because Los Angeles County banned the sale of guns on county property.  Los Angeles County lost a considerable amount of money banning legal gun shows.  Nevada is business savvy so they receive revenue from legal business enterprises operating in their state.
