Thank you for sharing. Having been raised in NY, my dad told me how the stations west of the Mississippi started with "K" and the ones east, the only ones I was familiar with, started with a "W", but I didn't know about the early TX/NM border thing, so thanks for the info. I'm a bit smarter now than I was this morning.
When I was a kid, every Sunday the family would listen to a station out of Schenectady, NY, which had been owned by General Electric (not Westinghouse) with 3 letters, WGY. That was the only one I knew of that had three letters, at least when I was a kid. Now, living out west, I hear powerful 3 letter stations all the time at night -- KNX, KFI, KOA, KOB, and KSL (the last being in Salt Lake City, so it incorporated the city's initials into the call sign). Of course, there are a lot of small stations with the 4-letter callsigns that represent the town or locations they are in, but my favorite is in Elmira, NY -- WENY. I can't imagine telling anyone where you work and still keeping a straight face!
If I could suggest callsigns for a brothel, they'd be: KBJ, KSEX, KASS, KISS, KUNT, KOCK or if they could have numbers in the callsign, K69S !!! Of course, that's for houses west of the Mississippi ...

Here's a leg-wetting fact about WLS in Chicago. They were originally on the air to promo Sears to farmers! Worlds Largest Store (WLS).
It's more about the journey than the destination!
