Van Halen

#1

Post by rachelvarga »

I am always surrounded by music in my house. Roomate and all that. For some reason I have heard a lot of Van Halen lately and I never knew who were there. Anyways, I think the song Top Jimmy is a really fun song and we need some fun right now. I think I'll start listening to them for a while because music is depressing these days.

I'm going to let you give me recommendations on which Van Halen songs are the best. I will listen to them and give my response. I read the VanHalen wiki page so I'm good to go!

Rachel Varga link wrote: Okay here are some interesting things I read.

Panama is the name of one of Roth's cars.
Why Can't This Be Love. No facts but nice song.
Aint Talking About Love - Eddie thought it was too cheesy and didn't want to show the band but he did.
Jump - Eddie is using an Oberheim OB-Xa for the keyboard which coincidentally I found a list of songs it's been used on.

You ready for this. From this page.
:)

I agree.. no facts on Why Can't this be love.  It's fun.  I've been in such an upbeat music mood.  I've been listening on to things that makes me smile.  The Mrs. likes this too.  Music affects my moods and I like to always be happy.

Didn't know some of the facts you shared, very cool.  Thank you for educating yours truly  ;)   Holy crap, you went way down the rabbit hole with the Oberheim  ;D

You know, Rachel... you're a pretty cool lady.  Your a dangerous lady but, a very cool lady.  Dangerous in the combination of looks and intelligence.  You're really sharp.  You have a sharp tongue too but, cane be downright sweet at times.  I think it's the international girl coming through.  The Mrs. is very direct and so are you.  You're growing on me  :)

Crack The Sky is another good one.
Omg I didn't post about him because no one would know. People don't take him serious because of the mask but he is extremely introverted. He has only done maybe two serious interviews in his career and he just turned 50. He started doing it when he was in his first band because of his introversion. He is not crazy at all. He does it for fun. There are only two pictures wihout the mask. One video when he was young and it may not be him. I don't think he has ever had a girlfriend, smoke, drink, drugs. He literally writes music constantly. Prolificly.

Yes he has 300 albums and twenty albums with  other people. He has all kinds of music. Everything from the heaviest thing know to man, (Cuckoo Clocks of Hell) to beautiful albums like Colma.

What's funny is people always say so and so is better but all the major badass guitarists say he is the badass. Lol.

Don't get me started on Buckethead. He is beyond awesome.

I like the Kinks remakes.  The Kinks are very underrated.  Eddie must have liked them.

You Really Got Me / Eruption
Where have all the Good Times Gone  (not a real positive song but I like it)

As far as original work:
Hot for teacher
Dance the night away      from Wikipedia - Roth claimed, during a 2006 performance in San Diego, California, that he wrote this song

in tribute to an intoxicated woman who was having sex in the back of a truck and ran with her pants on backwards while escaping police officers into the bar where the fledgling band was playing.

From that era - Van Halen isn't one of my top favorites but they are solid.  They were really good live from everything I"ve seen on Youtube etc.  and gave good performances consistently.  I"m not that big on the Hagar era.  This is a fun thread.  Let's do a band every few days.

I listened to all the albums a couple of times and read about them on Wikipedia.

Van Halen - Every song is good.
Van Halen II - Not as good but it feels like the two could be one album.
Women and Children First - I like this one. I really like the song "Could this be magic?". It's cute and funny.
Fair Warning - A sort of Dark album. That into is pretty cool. I don't know if you know but "Come on Dave give me a break" is the producer Ted Templeton. He said that because Roth was always saying stuff and goofing around like that.
Diver Down - Has I think 4 cover songs.
1984 - #2 on the charts and easily the best album. It sounds really different as in the production. I did some research. Up until that point Eddie didn't think he was a big influence. Then I guess he became more vocal, built his own studio and they recorded there. Panama, Hot For Teacher, and Top Jimmy are my favorites. When I listen to Panama I want to really go fast. It's just a cool driving song.

I have the next era to listen to and read about. Anyway I see why Eddie is so influential. I saw them with Roth when I first got here and I didn't know the songs but Roth sang  was out of key while Eddie sounded like the album from what I remember.

Although I do like Van Halen both with Roth and Hagar, when it came to the live performances Hagar was far superior. Hagar had the same energy on stage and a much better voice live.

Yes he has really great presence but his voice is gone. He does this annoying thing where he rephases the lyrics. A lot of singers do this.

I think it happens to a lot of guys.

I looked up my next era Hagar and this is 2019. The guy us un key and not running out of breath.

But very different singers.

Well it was a good run for Sammy. His voice held up longer than most.

I enjoy finding those old YouTube VH concert clips like from the '81 Fair Warning tour ("Unchained," "Hear About It Later," "So This Is Love")...as well as the '82 Diver Down clips from Fargo, ND

there's a "shredder" version from the '95 tour of "Why Can't This Be Love" with Eddie's guitar up in the mix and another concert (Toronto?) where Sammy shares a verse between Michael Anthony (truly missed)  & Eddie...

a killer MTV live version of "Top of the World" ...the "official" releases like the "Live Without A Net" video from the 5150 tour and the Right Here, Right Now CD of the F*CK tour had their moments but a little too slick for me (someone remarked that Eddie's guitar tone was "too wet.").

Sadly, the Tokyo Dome set released in 2015, while the band cooks, is barely listenable with Roth's sloppy approach--like a past-his-prime pitcher now throwing junk (the 2007 tour would've been a better release). Believe or not, Gary Cherone did a decent job delivering vocals that did justice on the '98 Australian tour video though his "onstage presence" was severely lacking (like dressing up in a "disco suit" as Eddie and Alex described).
