There's a few new business' that even a decade ago I thought there was never a need for, something that would never evolve into an actual business. 1-800-GOT-JUNK is one of them.

As a homeowner, we would just call these "dump runs." Your buddy shows up to your home on a Saturday morning, load up the old furniture, junk in garage, etc. and load up the back of the pickup truck. Go to local landfill and dump! Costs $20-25 to dump and your buddy needed at least pizza and beer for payment.

I can only image what these new franchised "dump runs" cost. Lol

I never thought I would need to call one of these trash pickup services, but then again I have no friends.  ;D
For a couch and an old school huge tv. I was quoted $250 or less, depending on the space it took up. Of course they charged me the full $250.

The nice thing about it was, they did all the work. It was very convenient though. They showed up an hour after I called and were done in about 15 minutes.
I would use the service again for huge back breaking items that I can’t lift. Smaller items, I would do the dump run or donate them.

I had to hire one of those junk haulers when I was selling my house.  I had a bunch of old furniture, some ancient appliances, and whatnot that my parent had stashed away that I couldn't sell or donate, so I had no other choice, but to pay to get the stuff removed.  Otherwise, the buyer would have requested compensation, if they had to hire someone to clear out the junk.  I think I paid close to $500, but it was a pretty big load ...LOL ...and there were 2 guys doing the work, so the job was completed pretty quickly.

I used them about 6 mo. ago. Had a old metal office desk (GSA Surplus) that probably weighed 100-150lbs., they also took a bunch of old paint cans partially filled, and a 13" Tube Television. Was worth it to me as i would have had to hire at least w people for the desk, and paid for hazardous disposal on the other stuff. They took care of everything all I had to do was point.

The next time I do bulk garbage from a house project I may have to hire someone like that. Since I bought my home my township has instituted restrictions on type and quantity of waste you can bring down. I'm actually limited to 1 or 2 bags of bulk waste a month (yes a month : ) to dump down there. So those days of me piling up 6 or 8 bags of bulk waste in a compact car (you'd be surprised how much you can fit in one ;D ) and going down there are sadly over. They also want to see that you're a town resident so they check ID's and write it on a sheet. Plus they've banned any type of rental trucks (Home Depot, UHaul) from dropping off any waste down there. Of course you can schedule a bulk pick up from the town and pay their fees : > .  Though if you fill it up with something like brush, dirt, or one or two items of old furniture you're good to go, just no big or multiple loads a day. So Slednx it may not necessarily be from lack of motivation on the individual, it may just be the path of least resistance that these companies gained traction. Then again you still live in Free America  8) .
