Was/is Cathouse good for lpin?


I’ve got thoughts both ways but would love to see yours

I know I've brought this up before, but I was a regular watcher of Penn & Teller's Showtime series "Bullshit!". (If you have Showtime on Demand, or have their app all the episodes are on there, you can also get it on ITunes.) While I don't agree with all their views, they did a great episode on Prostitution. When they talked about LPIN they filmed at the Wild Horse and were very informative with realistic depictions of the business and industry. To anyone curious about LPIN and brothels I'd recommend they watch the Bullshit! episode before watching an episode of Cathouse.  And I felt this way before I worked at The Mustang.


It's all about how things are filmed and information is presented. Cathouse is a reality show like Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Duck Dynasty, Real Housewives, and everything else where there is basis in truth but things are played up for maximum shock and awe factor and viewership. Bullshit! took more genuine documentary and informative approaches with comedic elements.

I'll be sure to check that out. I've never really had an interest in wathcing Cathouse for just that reason but would love to see a more realistic depiction of the industry. Thanks for the suggestion!

I've seen a few episodes in reruns, but I mainly watched them for their entertainment value ...LOL.  It was cool seeing some of the ladies in the show who I've met previously during some of my visits to the BR.  I thought "Cathouse: The Musical" was pretty good.  Brooke Taylor is also a talented lady. 

I have some friends and colleagues who have seen a few episodes and they thought the BR was located in Vegas ...LOL.  I didn't want to out myself whenever the topic came up, so I just sat back and listened ...LOL.  Most of them would probably never visit a brothel, even before seeing Cathouse, but they were more than just shocked at the cost.  They also had some interesting comments about Dennis too ...LOL ...and they weren't very nice.

I dunno, Cathouse may have made the public more aware of the Nevada brothels, but the show was mostly "Hollywood". 

Good in that it enlightened people to legal prostitution.


Bad in that it portrayed it as not cost effective for the average guy. Gave many Ladies a false sense of how much they’d make.


Potential clients and Ladies who did their homework found out if it would really work for them but the potential Clients that didn’t were lost and many of the Ladies who didn’t had a rude awakening when they weren’t booking parties like they saw on Cathouse and consequently had very bad experiences

I was literally just coming to post a thread called "The Cathouse Effect".


One thing I have noticed from the time of the original special in the early 2000s and now is how much younger the ladies are. AFA, Caressa, Sunset, Deanne, Karla, Lexie Lovelace, and Daisy all appeared to be in their thirties or close to it. Now it seems like late teens and early 20s. Also, and this is probably the brothel owners' influence, negotiations seem exceptionally smooth in later episodes as opposed to the earlier ones where clients are filmed being obnoxious towards the ladies. In the first special a pimp was filmed roughly groping a lady in negotiations trying to recruit her away from the ranch. It also showed two guys really haggling with Sunset Thomas, and a lady getting in trouble for yelling at two guys who were extremely rude to her during a tour. IMO by the end of Cathouse it was a recruiting tool as much as it was a docuseries. Especially one of the very last episodes when they showed the "auditions" of women as though they were just then applying when they had been employed by the BR long before the filming of the episode, including Dennis' girlfriend at the time Cami.


Other brothel docs I've seen are Pleasure for Sale and an episode of Louis Theroux's America. They have less of an infomercial tone.

At the time Cathouse came out it did help LPIN.  There was a lot more traffic. It probably still does to some degree but back then it was very good for LPIN.

Oh Six .... you know our story a bit and we feel like you're trolling us.  Still, we are about to chomp down on the bait and become the first people ever exiled from brothellife! 

Being from the West Coast and relocating to the midwest, we spent a lot of weekends in the Vegas area, and a lot of time on the I-80 between Reno/CC & Salt Lake City.  We were aware of the brothels and active in pursuing somewhat unique activity in our intimate lives.  The idea of swinging into the brothels was absolutely something we discussed.  Our research of the brothels however, consisted entirely of the cathouse series!  While there wasn't much talk of price on the show, there were a handful of times that they mentioned prices that were so far above what we were willing to pay - that we stayed away!  It would be years again before we even considered anything other than "independent" situations that didn't involve large digits followed by comma's as a cost for the adventure. 

The cathouse series had kept us away for probably 10 years worth of experiences in LPIN.  Then, last year, Mrs MWC suggested we look into it a bit again because we had a roadtrip planned across I-80 without kids.  We found an internet board, like this one, and asked some questions.  While we quickly realized the taboo nature of price - there were a few who actually helped.  I'll only mention FlyFisher, because nobody can hold it against him, but there were others who educated us and let us know the cathouse series was NOT the norm at every (or even any) brothel and provided us with an idea of what we may expect to find. A year later, here we are with three trips under our belt and excited for MANY more adventures!   


No one will ever know how many people were like us, who would have come out to a brothel if not for the cathouse information.  Everyone has their own unique perspective on this industry, but for us - the cathouse series almost kept us away forever and we are extremely grateful to the FlyFisher's of the internet who helped us really learn the truth.

You should offer a Room party. Unlike the film it would actually take place in one room. Wear a red shirt, nothing else, and say things that make no sense as foreplay to sex.

I think the OP is asking did it help LPIN in general. It may have turned some people off but many many men found out about lpin.  The brothels were much busier then. There is no doubt that it heped short term but longer term it's still debatable.


I lived in Vegas three years and never knew about brothels. I saw Cathouse and the rest is history.

As a local who partied many times at the Bunnyranch prior to seeing the first episodes of Cathouse coming out, my impressions were.


1. Holy shit, are they only showing whale parties?


2. Why aren't they showing local's/ regulars who go in and party for reasonable rates?


3. Hey, I partied with her, and her......cool.


Overall, it hurt the industry as those who knew little about the ranches now thought it was far out of their financial reach. Can't tell you how often I heard things that only reinforced that as I traveled the west coast and spoke with many young, single men up in the mountains on trips. Not one even thought of paying a visit to Nevada to try the house. Not because they didn't find the ladies attractive, not because they thought it would be cool to try once but rather they thought they would never pay or be able to afford a basic party.
