Van Halen

I am always surrounded by music in my house. Roomate and all that. For some reason I have heard a lot of Van Halen lately and I never knew who were there. Anyways, I think the song Top Jimmy is a really fun song and we need some fun right now. I think I'll start listening to them for a while because music is depressing these days.

I'm going to let you give me recommendations on which Van Halen songs are the best. I will listen to them and give my response. I read the VanHalen wiki page so I'm good to go!

For me the fun Van Halen stuff is with David Lee Roth singing lead. The Sammy Hagar stuff is more watered down & pop driven but some ok

They did several covers that I think are better than the originals
Pretty Woman
Dancing in the Streets
You Really Got Me (eruption intro)

And the Cradle will Rock
Jamie’s Cryin

There’s a few

Ain’t talking ‘bout love

Awesome intro. Also used in a 2Live Crew song.

I am actually a fan of Van Halen with Roth and Hagar.

With Roth:
Mean street

Drop dead legs

With Hagar:
Summer nights
Best of both worlds
Black and blue

Boone, those are all great tunes! Loved the group with both Sammy and Dave :) Eddie is in the top two greatest guitarists of all time, of course the number 1 was left handed  ;D
One of my favorite solos of all time:

Not my favourite, but he was pretty good. Anyone who brought about interesting genres and positive change, I have respect for. Like the Beatles, don't much care for them, but have enormous respect.

It’s all opinion.
Jimi Hendrix is always voted #1 when polls like this are taken. Eddie seems to land anywhere between 2-5.
The man has talent, there’s no arguing that & personal taste is just that, personal like anything else.

When I first got here I saw them with David Lee Roth when they reunited. They played a lot of sings from what I remember. Eddie Van Halen's son was playing bass.

I didn't know many of the songs. Now looking at tour footage on youtube I remember. I remember played something and it was called Cathedral. He did this kind of thing on guitar. Someone told me it the beginning of the song Mean Street and part of Eruption.

The very last song was Jump. I remember that distinctly.

Okay here are some interesting things I read.

Panama is the name of one of Roth's cars.
Why Can't This Be Love. No facts but nice song.
Aint Talking About Love - Eddie thought it was too cheesy and didn't want to show the band but he did.
Jump - Eddie is using an Oberheim OB-Xa for the keyboard which coincidentally I found a list of songs it's been used on.

You ready for this. From this page.

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/electro ... songs.html

Best Oberheim OB-X/OB-Xa/OB-8 songs

I say Morris Day & The Time (all), Prince (Lady Cab Driver, Darling Nikki, I Would Die 4 U, Delirious and more from 1999, Controversy, Dirty Mind, and Purple Rain), Kenny Loggins Footloose, Sheila E The Glamorous Life, Queen I Want To Break Free Intro, Chaka Khan I Feel For You (the horns and some of the leads/chords), Queen I Want To Break Free chords, Rush Subdivisions, Rush Tom Sawyer bass layer, Funkytown Lipps Inc lead synth. Forgot Jam and Lewis and Lakeside, Midnight Star, One Way (Solar apparently other than 8-10 Prophet 5s they had about 2-4 OB-Xs and an OB-Xa and even the ARP Quadra which was used to play the bass in Fantastic Voyage). Also, if it was really used, Barkays Freakshow On The Dancefloor, Tripping Out, She Talks To Me With Her Body, and Do It (Let Me See You Shake) (they reportedly used a minimoog for bass, I'm talking about the lead instruments, like the mod wheel brass, the leads come apparently from Prophet 5, minimoog, and the OBX and some 70's monosynth (Korg or Roland)).
Edit: forgot Van Halen Jump, I'll Wait, 1984 and Why Can't This Be Love
As well as any work by Italo disco artists that used them and David Frank.

1984 (the song) by Van Halen

All the Prince / Time stuff, plus Killing Joke 'Love Like Blood'.

Rush - The Camera Eye

Legowelt - Croissant With Stravinsky is nice

clusterchord

favorite tracks that made me fall in love with the obie sound:

Crises from Mike Odlfield -Crises(1983) -

Simple Minds - Someone, somewhere in summertime: does chorus hook and some other stuff. jup4 and 8 are pads:

Tangerine Dream: Tangram (1980) - OB-X is over the whole album really, but beginning of Set2 its quite prominent:

also all over Exit (1981), in my view, probably most definitive OBX album:

Practically everything by the Thompson Twins in their prime.

Stand Back by Stevie Nicks is always fun.

Stranglers 'European Female'

Flash Gordon score

There’s a few
Pretty Woman. Nice song by Roy Orbison.
Dancing In The Streets - I don't like that one too much.
You Really Got Me - It's okay.

And The Cradle Will Rock - I like this song. The beginning part is not a guitar. Keyboards through distortion. Funny line. "Have you seen Junior's grades.  Lok.

Jamies Crying - Ripped of by Tone Loc. That song by him sucked. I didn't make it through to the end.

Has a weird guitar sound. It is played in a dropped tuning? Through a phaser.

Funny part.

Size 5. That's considered big now to some but women were fuller. I like those old pinup art. Women were so glamorous and full back then.

Mean Street and Unchained  I listened to this album. Fair Warning.  Loved it.

Drop Dead Legs. 1984 - something different about this album. Production? Really cool album. Top Jimmy is the one I really liked but almost all the sings sound good.

I have to find another band to explore. There is this Icon series on Netflix and it had the guitar player for Black Sabbath. Should this be my next one to explore? Something dark?

Eddie was trained to be a concert pianist from age 5 to early teens. Then he discovered Rock & the guitar & shortly dumped the piano after.
When he wanted to introduce the piano into some Van Halen songs he had great resistance from the band. He forced them into it on Jump

If you like heavy guitar, give Buckethead a shot, he's got like over 300 albums. You can find a lot of songs on youtube. This one' s my favorite.

Crack The Sky is another good one.
