One thing I hope occurs this year is King Diamond finally releasing his upcoming album, “The Institute.” I’m a huge King Diamond fan and I’m also a metalhead as well (if you’ve seen me on Twitter and other boards). This is King’s first new output since “Give Me Your Soul...Please” back in 2007!

I can’t get enough of this song.

King has been around since the early 80s. He was the lead singer of Mercyful Fate, then he was a solo act for a while. In the 90s, Mercyful Fate reformed, so he was releasing albums from both projects until 1999 when he started focusing on his solo stuff. This year was to be a small Mercyful Fate tour, with the only American date in Vegas, but it got pushed to next year.

King’s a legend, basically. His music also saved my life.

It’s hard to pick a favorite album. Abigail is his most famous one, but I also like Them, Conspiracy, The Graveyard, and The Puppet Master. King does concept albums, so if you want the stories told on them, best to listen to the whole thing. I do have him on my Spotify.

As far as Mercyful Fate, I can recommend Melissa, Don’t Break The Oath, In The Shadows, and 9. Mercyful Fate differs from King Diamond as with King Diamond, King is all about storytelling and creating a haunting atmosphere while Mercyful Fate is five guys in a jam session.

Recommended songs:

King Diamond:

1. Welcome Home
2. Arrival
3. Abigail
4. Blood To Walk
5. No Presents For Christmas
6. The Candle
7. Sleepless Nights
8. Just A Shadow
9. The Storm
10. Give Me Your Soul

Mercyful Fate:

1. Evil
2. A Dangerous Meeting
3. Come To The Sabbath
4. Into The Coven
5. The Bell Witch
6. Witches’ Dance
7. The Oath
8. Last Rites
9. The Uninvited Guest
10. Gypsy
