The History of Dovetail Brothel

I was going through what I can only call “a phase of life” when I bought $1.3 million worth of real estate in 20 months. It was during this time that I stumbled across the little log cabin brothel. At the time they were asking $250K for it. I made a lesser offer for the cabin sans brothel license but they kept putting me off. Their other offers kept falling through for three years and by then the building was in a shambles. They were told that if it wasn’t repaired before the coming winter, it would have to be burned to the ground. That’s when I got it.

Shortly after I got the building back in shape, gold prices took a dump and I lost over a million dollars in real estate. I looked at all my options for the little cabin and ultimately decided to look into the brothel business. I educated myself with a $100 a night tuition. Drinks were $10 apiece at the other brothels so I bought the girl’s drinks to get information about how things worked. After I had an idea of what I needed to do I applied for a brothel license. After a year, I was awarded a license and told “You’re never going to make it.” There could not have been a better thing to say to me to assure that I WOULD, indeed, “make it”.

Naming the cabin came from a series of inspirations. I wanted the word “Tail” in the name but that was an incomplete idea until I read the book, “Soiled Doves”. Then, I looked up the meaning of “Dovetail” and found that it means “A perfect fit”. The Dovetail Brothel was born. I had a wife then who I was married to for almost 5 minutes (I’m not good at marriage). We opened The Dovetail Brothel in August 2001. Just one month later 911 happened, the whole country was in shock, and my girls all flew home to be with their families. My wife and I ran it for a year. I tended bar all night and then worked as a Crane operator at the Gold Mine all day. One day I was running the Crane with a couple electricians in the man basket and realized I had to stop the madness before someone got hurt.

Trixie (not her real name) rented it for a couple of years. She didn’t do a very good job and was openly telling people she was going to burn it down, and since her uncle was a fire investigator, she knew she would get away with it. A month later she set the cabin on fire and burned a lot of it down – and got away with it. On the left side of our bar where the fire was, you can still see where they had a bottle of Jagermeister & Jack Daniels as accelerants because the out-line of the bottles are burned into the wall. I got some buddies from the Goldmine to agree to sandblast it and a buddy from my hometown of Moab to bring potash and rebuilt & refurbished the cabin…again.

I reopened after a lawyer pulled up into my parking lot and offered to become a partner which led to an eight-year lawsuit. I’d like to say I won but nobody wins in those drawn-out fights. Six different people tried to run it after that. Number seven was Jade from Egypt. She didn’t want to run it but she said she’d find me someone who could. She introduced me to Monica.

Since Monica took over the Dovetail, we have won LPIN Gathering Awards & LPIN Awards for Small & Rural Brothel of the Year 9 times since 2011. That makes Dovetail the winningest small, rural brothel of all time. In addition, three Dovetail Courtesans, Belle, Roxy & Vanity Affair, have won Courtesan of the Year in the last 7 years. In addition, Belle, who will be returning this spring, has won the “Courtesan Career Achievement Award”. None of my marriages lasted even 2 years. My business relationship with Monica lasted 11 years. It was an amazing run.

I am eagerly looking forward to welcoming Mia as our new Madam on the Menu and reopening the house in March. Transitions are perfect for making new plans and we have a lot of those. Recently I’ve acquired 1400 acres a mile and a quarter due west of the Dovetail Brothel. There are forces at play in this region that will bring some interesting changes and I am ready for them.
