Need multi-purpose knife advice

Hi everyone,

Don’t worry, I am not going to shank anyone. I’d like to get my boyfriend a nice multi-functional knife (like a Swiss army kind of thing) for his birthday. I was wondering if there are any hunter/fisherman/handy/outdoorsy and otherwise knife using folks on this board that could guide me to a good one. Do I go with a standard Swiss or is there something better out there?

In a good knife you get what you pay for.  I have use many different kinds ( I hunt and fish year around ) but the best ones I have or Case and Buck.  Be sure and ask for the ones made in the U.S though.  Yes there is such a thing.

Different states have different laws on knives so you might want to check out the laws in the state you are in.

The Victorinox Swiss Army Knives are the best of that type.  There are many listed on Amazon.com.

Also, the Leatherman Multitool is nice too, but not as compact.

In addition, Cold Steel makes good folding, hunting and fishing knives, but they aren't multifunctional or multitools.

Thank you so much! I will probably go with a mid-range Victorinox firefighter mentioned. I don’t know why my guy loves preparing for the apocalypse so much but he is very into survival gear and it makes shopping for him easy. :)

I try to be a good woman to him...maybe it’ll keep him out of the brothels, lol. Though of the two of us I’m the one more likely to party.

I’m no knife expert but I’ll add remember the more things it does the less things it will do well. Multitools are great for what they are but not usually great knives

Like Cobia mentioned, I would check your state law regarding legal blade length, if he plans to carry on himself all the time.  That would also narrow down your choices.

I've owned a few Swiss Army knives and Letterman multitools, but I also found that the ones with the most gadgets tend to be awkward to use.  So, it's all depends on what features are important for the particular person.

I currently carry the Victorinox One-Handed Trekker.  One of the nice features is that the blade can be opened using one hand and it locks in place for safety.  It doesn't have a lot of gadgets like some of the others, but has most of the basics that I use often.

I'm a big fan of the Leatherman Wave. Matter of fact I have two, one in my car and one at work. I find the serrated blade does a better job cutting than the straight one. That's the main thing I use it for cutting, since where I work they harass you for having a standard knife (also love the needle nose pliers). You can also check out the Gerber brand multi tools. They're supposed to be good as well, but I'm a Leatherman guy ;D . If he's the outdoor type then a stand alone blade that folds would probably be better and unfortunately I'm of no use on that front right now.

Another Leatherman Wave fan here. It has been a lifesaver for me a few times. Plus when part of the needlenose pliers broke, they replaced it no questions asked!

For years I told myself I did not need such an item. Then I found a Leatherman in the desert. When the knife blade broke (I was NOT misusing it) I returned if to the manufacturer who replaced the blade gratis and shipped it back postpaid.

I still don't think I need such an item but it appeals to the small boy in me.

Thank you all so much. His birthday was March first and the 16 function Victorinox Swiss Army Knife I went with per firefighter’s suggestion was a big hit—especially the tiny but powerful magnifying glass.

Also he got laid. LOL.

I really try to be a good lady to him.
