Dune

#1

Post by rachelvarga »

Dune is the greatest science fiction novel ever written. It is the Lord of the Rings of science fiction. Great cast and Timothee Chalamet as Paul is perfect. He is in a movie on Netflix called The King which is about King Henry V.

Speaking of that. There is a scene in which he to fight a guy in armor. The part I like is that they are quickly rundown under the weight of the armor and this is something you never see with Knights in movies. They wear armor like it's nothing but in reality it is heavy and the fight scene is very realistic. Anyway, great actor.

I have read Dune in Romanian and English and I will read it again on my next trip to the Ranch. The trailer really looks good. Oh I want to correct some things that are wrong. At the end where the sandworm comes up and then backs away from paul is not because he controls it. It is simply because they made it to an outcrop of rocks and sandworm won't go on to the rocks.

I'm surprised no one has commented but I guess they haven't read it. Most people stop reading after high school or college. That's a shame.

I read Dune when I was younger (and Children of Dune). It was an excellent book and would recommend to anyone who likes a bit of sci-fi but not too heavy. Similar to GOT in its political machinations and backstabbing.

The film with Sting in was a load of nonsense, but the mini series from around 2000 I think, was pretty good and explored their universe in greater detail. Hopefully the new film is not all about Paul Atredies (plus his alter ego) and Chani, gotta give Gurney Halleck some love to. Always want more explanation about how the great houses work and their rivalries (like Badlands on a Galactic scale). I hope Chani likes Paul's large worm though, I heard some ladies don't  :o ;D
Just a Brit happy to be in the US.

You sold me on the politics similar to GOT.  I read the song of ice and fire series until George RR decided to not release any new volumes.  The first 3 volumes were epic, the 4th pretty bad and 5th getting better again... 6 and 7 I never knew you  :) ;D

The houses are all part on the Landsraad. They are a balance with the Emperor and his forces. They enforce the laws on each other. Like a ban on Atomics and thinking machines. Use either one and the rest will use their atomics to obliterate everyone and everything on your planet. There are similar things in Earth.

Houses and their planet = countries
Landsraad = United Nations
CHOAM = OPEC
Atreides = America/England (West Europe)
Harkonnens = Soviets/Russians
Bene Gesserit = inspired by his Jesuit Aunts.
Spice Melange = Oil

This is my interpretation. It was written in 1965.

It's not comparable to GOT. Maybe Lord of the Rings. I do have to say that Game of Thrones is very much it's own world and Martin has written one one of the great fantasy sagas.

The show was good but the ending was a disaster. Daenerys rampage was bad writing. Martin did not write this. The show went it's own way after a few seasons.

Her character has been established. To destroy Westeros over what what Cersei did after constantly wanting to show she is good and Cersei evil is not a good reason. The character would have to be in extreme turmoil, much more than what triggered her.

It just went to hell at the end. Characters abrupt changes seems like writers trying too hard to create a twist.

Only LOST was worse at the end.

I completely agree.  It's unfortunate the Martin didn't finish the novels before the end of the tv series.  The ending of GOT show was a disservice to all of those that put in the hours to watch the show.  I really can't wait for the novels to be completed so that we can know the real ending.  I really need to read more, my younger sister and I used to read a book at least once a quarter together.  Now my times so constrained that I'm down to reading graphic novels  :P

That show is what caused the Mrs to have such a major crush on Jason Mamoa  ;)

The tv show parted from the novels and even if finished they wouldn't have followed them.

Jason Mamoa is in Dune. He plays Duncan Idaho.  I was worried because he has the least experience in many ways with range of characters. Especially drama but I think he will do good being around so many good actors and Duncan needs some bravado just not the corny type.

He is a master swordsman and what swordsman doesn't have at least a little bravado.

It looks like they cut Paul's sister Alia from the new movie.

She will be in part 2 most likely. She doesn't show up until Jessica takes the Water of Life and goes through the Spice Agony giving her full powers of a Reverend Mother in the womb.

Abomination. A sad character in Dune Messiah. There's no way you can cut her because she kills.......... Hahaha. Sorry guys. Read the book.
