There are people smarter that Homer Simpson overseeing computer security. There just isn't enough of them. Its one of the highest in demand jobs out there. 5 years ago I was studying to get into that field when I was offered another position that pulled me away from it.

The question is how much is exposed in such a way to potentially get hacked.

As far as colonial goes, they got away cheap from everything I've heard. Most ransomware attacks at a company that sized would have had ransoms 5-10X times what they asked for, which is one of the reasons it was paid.

The thought is they realized the impact of the system to millions and had to take what they can get.

There are people smarter, buts its a chase game or cat n mouse. Also depends how much corps want to spend on security as well - its expensive, n then there employees cyber best practices.  There is a big need for employees, n smaller companies cant pay ppl w even one year of  experience what they think they desearve w little experience.  Its crazy!!  I had one guy say I want this number I looked at him n said .... we will miss u, i cant come close..bye lol.

Foreign countries are doing this. The reality is that humans have a skill that they constantly perfect. It's called invention.

You can build quantum machines for unbreakable encryption and someone will make something that bresks it with an even more powerful mechanism. Yes, I have a basic understanding of how the machine works. Very basic. Anyways, this cyber theft will continue for a long time.

An article in our local newspaper said the perpetrators of this ransom attack on the Colonial pipeline are Russians. It also said these criminals had software that won't target businesses that use Cyrillic language keyboards. So, yes, foreign countries with bad intentions are already targeting US businesses. Maybe US businesses ought the learn Russian...  :
