Interesting developments by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) using quantum physics and very-low-frequency (VLF) digitally modulated magnetic signals.

VLF signals propagate worldwide.  However, the data rate is very very low.  Using the quantum properties of the rubidium atoms may change all that.

Currently, one of the few users of VLF frequencies are the US submarines who can receive their nuclear missile launch instructions from the transmitters located in Michigan's iron range.
