Don't laugh too hard about the signs the human body gives off, including the perception of animals.
One university is working on a device that can smell one's breath and detect covid-19.
(Kim Komando Computer Radio Show - 4/4/2020)
Dogs have sniffed owners' body spots and the doctor found cancer.
Cats would visit residents in a nursing home the night before the specific resident would die.
There are all kinds of signs and smells the body gives off that reveal the person's health. The problem is detection.

Oops. Correction.
The Carnegie Mellon University app actually detects covid-19 by recording a person's voice using various voice prompts via your cell phone. The recorded voice is compared against a data base of known covid-19 patients and their voice patterns. Since covid is in the lungs and voice production involves the lungs and throat, I can see the plausibility of such a theory.
If it is reasonably accurate, it sounds like a great first level screening that is cheap and fast.
