Too bad most of these ladies are forever nameless. It would be interesting if one could put together a whole list of courtesans and their individual stories.

Very cool!! I love the old black and white photos. So much history! My dad born and raised in Nevada has an old statewide map showing all the brothels in Nevada some 40 years ago. Many no longer exist. I’ll try and get a picture of it and post.

Here's an interesting website (Legends Of America) which focuses on the history of the old west. They also have a section called "Painted Ladies Of The Old West" which includes some old photos of that era.

I heard that back then they charged one dollar an hour, and for some guys, they had to save for while to come up with that much.

Soiled Doves - Prostitution in the Early West by Anne Seagraves available at Amazon - $11.52
This book is full of stories of love, pain, loss, and triumph. It's hurts to read some of the stories (for anyone with at least half a heart) found there. On the flip side, there are stories of two people who start out as Courtesan/Client and end up in love and Familymaking. It's an encouraging book for any Courtesan or Client to read. On a personal note, it reminds me that if I ever have a "mate person" in life, a Courtesan is just as likely to fill that role as any other. A good read to be sure. I gave Belle a copy of it a few years ago. Highly recommeded.
