Where Are You From?

Recently my older brother acquired one of those DNA kits, took a swab from his inner cheek & mailed it in. The results had some surprises. Although those result are for my brother, I'm pretty sure they'd be the same for me.

I'm Hispanic officially (Census wise) because there is some Iberian Peninsula (Spain/Portugal) DNA in our blood (5%). There is also some Italian (Island of Sardinia specifically, 4%) & Pima Indian (Southern Arizona, 5%). I suspect these results are from my father's side of the family. My grandfather was born in Tucson which explains the Pima DNA.

There are other small traces of DNA from all over western Europe that could be from dad's side of the family but I'm thinking those western European results are most likely from my mother's side of the family. Mom told once a long time ago that our ancestors came from Scotland & the DNA results backs that up (6%). There is also a trace of Celtic DNA (Ireland). The biggest surprise... we're 13% Scandinavian!  :o  Golly-gee, I vood haf never known!

That wasn't the only surprise in the results. The real puzzler in the mix is the Pacific Islander DNA. Where the hell did that come from?  :o

From the results, I guess I'm a Heinz 57 mutt. The USA is a melting pot? I guess so!

I like Ancestry for DNA.. Mr had done both ancestry and 23 and me.  Mrs is kind of unlucky... she's first generation Asian... she usually gets 2 geographic areas saying yep, your Asian (the database is growing).

Mr.

24% England (surname is English)
24% German (Mom's maiden name is German)
23% Scotland (dad again)
15% Ireland (Mom's a red head)
3% Norway
3% Sweden
3% Russian / eastern European (guessing WW2 dna mixed in with the German above?)

Ancestry also shows the father's family were early New York settlers.

I have some friends who did the DNA testing via Ancestry dot com.  It's interesting how much information they can extract from your DNA about your ancestors, but I think it could lead to privacy issues too which is why I haven't had my DNA tested.  I wouldn't be surprised if someday that we'll see a national DNA database being compiled as these companies do more and more DNA testing. 8)

Very cute Lee. I look nothing like the other members of my family and I sometimes think they switched me at birth. Lol
