It's Sad But True, sometimes you have to Fight Fire with Fire when your Blackened catfish becomes The Thing That Should Not Be. Then you get philosophical about the dead fish and think to yourself, Am I Evil or Am I Savage. So now I'm Killing Time as the crabs Jump Into The Fire. Which one of them is going in first? The one with The Shortest Straw.

Not to be The Master of Puppets but I think this thread should Fade to Black before we end up in the Sanaterium from The Thing That Should Not Be.

Side note......I believe the "$5.98 EP" is Metallica's best sounding album! Love the Small Hours!

I like the 5.98 Ep but I think that Master of Puppets is the best because the production and engineering is really incredible and the songs captured the raw aggression of the band at that time. The album is very loud sonically, it is mixed by Michael Wagener and engineered by Flemming Rasmussen who did Ride The Lightning and the Justice album. James used a Mesa Boogie Mark IIc into Marshall JCM 800. Sorry, I could go on all day with amp settings and mic placements and other trivial things.

Definitely Masters! As far as guitar mix..like Montrose Montrose, n VH 1st both had grit.  There is a good youtube i watch on eddies brown sound.

The brown sound was originally the name of Alex's snare and the Eddie's sound got tagged with that name. The variac setting is 98 volts I believe. Even one volt makes the difference. I saw a video on the difference in the sound. Dropping the voltage makes it clip like when you send too little power to a bass speaker and it distorts. I think Fair Warning has the most crisp sound and VH1 has more punch but that intro to Mean Street that ends with that feedback is awesome.

People always forget about the sound on 1984. Sounded fucking good. Probably because they used his new studio. Top Jimmy cooks!

Top Jimmy damn straight n outta love.  The video on voltage was great... also i didnt know the split the amp n reverb tracks to add spacing in the mix Eddie rythem on right w his reverb on left. Was very cool.... back then when i did stuio stuff that was all art... from mixing or recording the drums n doorway of a large house for misty mountain hop!... To bostons first done in a guys garage!...

Yeah, that is really neat trick with the guitar on one side and the reverb panned to the other. I mean I hear it when I panned left and right but I thought it was just mic bleed, it never occurred to me that it was the reverb. Top Jimmy is a gem, he is playing in a alternate tuning. I think it is D A D A C D. Without that the harmonics are impossible and it will drive you crazy trying to figure that out. When I was a kid I had a lot of favorite bands and VH was one of the firsts. I was obsessed with them. Then I heard the song Battery and it was over. The acoustic guitar, the same theme heavy, those four chords, and then that Hetfield riff.
