Classic Mercyful Fate album Melissa

At work this evening, I was listening to several songs on my playlist from the debut full length album from Mercyful Fate, Melissa.

I was a late comer to King Diamond and Mercyful Fate. My first experience of hearing Mercyful Fate was when they covered “The Ripper” on a Judas Priest tribute album. My curiosity got the better of me and I bought Into The Unknown, which unbeknownst to me, Mercyful Fate was basically downgraded to King Diamond’s side project in the 90s. Still, this album blew me away, and I had to hear more. I was pretty excited to finally find Melissa on CD. That thing lived in my player for months on end.

Only us real good metalheads know this, but when Metallica recorded Ride The Lightning, it was in Denmark, using Mercyful Fate’s equipment. A good chunk of Ride The Lightning was written in Mercyful Fate’s rehearsal room. There’s a funny story about when Lars and James found King’s lyric book, and they were afraid to touch it. King wrote some scary lyrics for the time, dating back to Mercyful Fate’s self-titled EP which fans called Nuns Have No Fun.

Metallica and King Diamond are still friends to this day, and King also appeared in Guitar Hero Metallica with a re-recorded version of “Evil.” Also, Metallica’s “Mercyful Fate” on Garage Inc is a tribute to their friends.

This is a personal favorite of mine. I remember singing “Into The Coven” at the parks department while planting flowers and I think I scared a few people.  ;D
