Can anyone answer this question about masks

It has been a year now since we have been wearing these masks over our faces. This thread is NOT about whether they work, our rights or anything political but something I see often and can't figure out.

Why do people wear their masks while driving in their car by themselves. Or wear them them while walking outside by themselves. Somebody, please explain their reason.

Wearing a mask outside--it could be a community requirement thing. When I drive into the community I live in (>50% over age 50), there are signs telling everyone that masks are required inside public places and outside. My car is parked less than 100 feet away from my house so I don't bother with the mask until I get to my destination (grocery store or pharmacy) but for others who park along the streets and have a much greater distance between their house and car might just put on their mask before they leave their house and just leave it on until they get back from their trip to the grocery store. I'm thinking the community I live in set up that "mask outside" requirement due to all the people here who walk on the sidewalks--there's always people out and about walking on the sidewalks here. All the businesses here have the mask inside requirement notice posted on their doors. How much of this is really enforceable, especially the mask outside thing, I don't know.

It is hard for me to put on the mask.  So, if I have several stops all requiring masks, I put it on for the first stop and take it off after the last stop.

Why, the man asked?

Can't speak for everyone but I wear my mask sometimes even if there's no one around because it keeps my face warmer while walking early in the morning. I also wear it when walking the trails because joggers often run by you huffing and puffing with no mask on and they come up on you so fast and so close, you don't have time to get your mask on.  I also wear it in my car if I'm only going a short distance between two different stores rather then pull it off and then put it back on.  I also leave it on until I'm inside my car rather then pull it off like most people do once they leave a store even though they're walking close to other people in the parking lot.

I think two reasons:

1.  Some people are scared to death of this thing.  They believe that if the mask comes off - at all - their mouth will be immediately be assailed by the virus.
2.  One of the early cautions was to keep your hands away from your face.  When you remove your mask, you bring your hands to your face.  So if they put the mask on to, say, go to the store then on the way home in the car they keep the mask on.

I think a lot of people forget to take them off when they're driving.  Mr. stopped by Starbucks this morning to pickup his coffee.  When I left and started driving to work, I remembered I had my mask on after about 5 minutes.  Felt like a dummy but, oh well.  I forget to grab it from the car when walking in the parking lot too sometimes.  Literally, sometimes, it's just people being busy and forgetful.

I just wish more people would have been scared to death.  Maybe we wouldn't have over a half million deaths.

Probably just habit. You get in and forget because you are used to it.

And some of it can depend on the weather. When its 20 degrees outside, wearing the mask isn't nearly as bad as when its 90.
