My favorite mini series is
Shaka Zulu with Henry Cele. Shaka Zulu was the Last Great Warrior King; it's the true story of the legendary African warrior and his struggle to unite his people against the largest empire in the world.

Mine too, along with The Bronx is Burning, though I was more of a fan of the original book.

All the ones listed above are on the serious side... one I remember that ran on BBCA was Misfits. About a bunch of delinquent kids doing community service who suddenly get super-powers based on what they were thinking or feeling at the time. Dark comedy with a touch of drama.
