Did music go on life support around 1990

I think we've turned into our parents. ;D  I remember when I was a kid, my folks couldn't stand the Beatles and a lot of the music of my generation back in the '60s-'70s.

Today, I'm not into rap/hiphop like a lot of the younger crowd, but there are a few non-rap artist that I like ...LOL

I enjoy most genres of music, over several decades, but I often listen to the '60s and '70s channels, as well as some the classic rock and country music channels on Sirius/XM.

No we just got old and can't hang with most of the newer stuff. Basically what Doc said. My mom is an odd ball though she likes a lot of what would be considered pop now. But she doesn't really pay attention to lyrics. Where as if the lyrics don't speak to me I can't like it!

There were more then a few times when I was riding in the car with my high school nieces and they started to sing along with the radio and I would sing along with them. Although the songs were performed by current artists, the songs were a remix of songs from the 80'/early 90's. My nieces would ask "Uncle Steve how do you know the words?" I smiled and would inform them the year and original artist performing. I guess artists of today can't figure out new lyrics that appeals to this generation other the nasty rap.

I like some new stuff and have found bands from the 90’s on that I really like but admit the number of them decreases with each year. And with all music/performers I like some of their stuff others I think “is this the same band”?

There is a good Beatles tribute band in the Chicago area called "American English". I've been to several of their concerts and there are fans of all ages there. Good, classic music is universal. Some of these 60s and 70s bands have new generations of fans because their music is timeless and eternal.

I actually like much of the new music. I grew up in the 80's listening to big hair bands. My 20's  were spent listening to 90's rock. I evolve, today I am a Five Finger Death Punch, Avenge Sevenfold, Shinedown, Godsmack fan among many others.


To be honest, I kinda laugh and cringe when 80's rock comes on, I still like and listen to many 90's bands like Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam.


Just glad I didn't end up being a headbanger in his 40's still stuck on big hair bands.

The newer rock bands you mentioned are all good. But rock except for a few small pockets in this country Reno actually seems to be one of them is no longer pop.  It is what most of the country now considers pop. That a lot of us old folks have a hard time hanging with.


All the rock bands you mentioned are good if you like rock. But rock no longer has the nationwide popularly it once did. There are a few pockets here and there mostly on the east coast and in some other countries rock has risen again. But I think the main point here is us old farts that unfortunately includes you Sled have a hard time hanging with what is now considered poo music.


When I was a teen Rock was still king a lot of would be musicians. Wanted to grow up and be rock stars. That is not the case anymore at least in most of this country.


I also like country music. But that ain't what it once was either.?

San Francisco in the 60s! The epicenter of the counter-culture movement! That must have been a real privilege to be there then.
